2010 Absence

Unfortunately, I’m not in Scilly this year to do my normal Gig Championship coverage. I’ll still try to get the full results from the Saturday’s first race and Sunday’s final positions up before everyone else, but there will not be any of my own pictures or news this year.

Radio Scilly will being doing audio coverage, and BBC Cornwall are there as always.

Sailing race

The sailing race took place on Monday morning with a reasonable wind powering the gigs.

The Helford was the first to cross the startline, followed closely by the Royal. The Fly and Nornour came later, the Slippen being the last to start. The Nornour overtook the Helford only to loose its lead during a tack. The Nornour eventually won the race with a considerable lead over the Helford and Royal.

Mens’ and Ladies’ Final Results

Mens’ and ladies’ final WPGC results are on our results board. We are, as usual†, the first website to upload the full results*. We’ll be back next year for more of the same. Stay tuned for more pictures and video over the next week.

Polvarth Ladies and Warrior Men become new champions

LADIES

After coming third last year, the Roseland’s Polvarth ladies came back determined this year to beat the previous champions, Falmouth. After a photo finish, it was determined that the Polvarth beat the Famlouth’s Irene Too ‘by their fender’. Kensa finished third.

MENS

Second last year, Par Bay’s Warrior returned strong and beat the Miller’s Daughter by a length to become the new champions, taking the trophy from Mount’s Bay, who finished fifth? this year.

We’ll bring you more detail after the award ceremony, which started at 18.00. There are videos and pictures to be uploaded over the next week.

Mens’ Heat 1

The swell dies down a little for the start of the mens’ round one.

1/2: Irene Too has a strong lead. Emma Louise follows, with the Kensa, Tregarthen’s and Warrior fighting for third.

Finish: Irene Too increase their lead. Kensa overtakes Emma Louise who fall back level with Miller’s Daughter. Warrior and Tregarthen’s battle for fifth.

Ladies’ Heat 1

The ladies’ long race starts with a lot of swell.

At half way, the Kensa leads by a length. Irene Too and the Defender are tied second.

3/4: Irene chases Kensa and pulls away from the Defender by 4 lengths.

Finish: Kensa, 3 lengths, Irene Too, close third: Defender, Irene and Polvarth.

Boscastle’s gig the Rival comes a celebrated last.

Championships off to a good start

Friday’s weather was looking rather poor, though forecasts said it was supposed to improve. Luckily, it did, and the veteran’s races, which grow in popularity each year, took place underneath a wonderful Scillonian sunset.

The ladies’ race started first. First and second across the line were disqualified due to a false start. The race was technically won by the Helford crew in their new gig, the Pedn Billy. Kerens, now owned by Rock, came second and the local Tregarthen’s crew came third.

In the mens’ race, Newquay’s Hope came a strong first after managing to pull away from their main competition from Roseland’s Polvarth. See our gallery for images from The Garrison (around 3/4 way).

We have updated our database with the list of gigs supposed to compete this year.
